Dark circles under the eyes are an issue for many people – sometimes
even after a blepharoplasty.
Dark circles under the eyes can be caused by a number of factors. Often,
they are caused by a small ligament called the arcus marginalis that
tethers the dark circle to the bone of the eye socket. As the lower eyelid
ages and becomes lax, the fat supporting the eyeball begins to push out
against the lax lid, the lower eyelid skin begins to fall or sag down
towards the cheek.
Because the dark circle is tethered and cannot sag along with the lower
eyelid skin, the sagging lower eyelid skin falls over the dark circle.
The eyelid skin of the dark circle is thinner, which adds to the depression
that is created, and makes the shadow in the dark circle darker and more
noticeable.
To correct dark circles under the eyes, we perform a procedure to release
the arcus marginalis either as a separate procedure, or as part of our
proprietary Total
Eyelid Rejuvenation program. When the arcus marginalis is released,
the dark circle is free to move downward with the lax lower eyelid skin
and the shadow, causing the dark circle to be lessened. To compensate
for the thin skin of the dark circle, either fat or a tear
trough implant may be placed beneath the dark circle to plump up
the dark circle and lessen the shadow of the dark circle.
Our Total Eyelid Rejuvenation includes a Transconjunctival
Laser Blepharoplasty, the release of the arcus marginalis and/or
a tear
trough implant, and a LaserLyte
Peel®.
